Habits

We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.

- John Dryden

Every day in most everything we do, we do because of the habits we’ve created. Think about that. We may call them our daily routine, but essentially, these actions are really habits. There are two types of habits: those that serve us, and those that do not serve us. And the latter class of habits can make us prisoners of ourselves. Making new habits and eliminating old non-serving ones is easier said than done. Numerous books have been written about how to change your habits and change your life. They make it seem so simple: If you do this, then that will change. Mark Twain thought otherwise.

Habit is habit and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time. Mark Twain

Here are a few examples. Habits that serve us:

  • Being on time
  • Exercising
  • what needs to be done when it needs to be done
  • Planning
  • Food and drink in moderation

Habits that do not serve us:

  • Being late
  • Not exercising
  • Procrastinating
  • Smoking
  • Eating or drinking to excess

Now I could go on and on, and I will next week. For now, give some thought to how you can develop more habits that serve you. I think when you add new, good habits, some of the others will fall away automatically.
